Nestled in the corner of Sarasota marina in South West Florida, USA, is a great joint that’s serving big foods with a even bigger view. This June we checked out O’Leary’s Tiki Bar and Grill and we weren’t disappointed.
The joint: O’Leary’s Tiki Bar and Grill, 5 Bayfront Drive, Sarasota Marina, Florida, 34326, USA. You can find their website here.
The vibe: A relaxed and refreshing take on fast food with one of the best views in Sarasota. We opted for the Bleu Cheese Burger served with bacon, fries, and pickles and a quarter pound Kraut dog with…you guessed it…lashing of sauerkraut and a un-healthy amount of fries to boot. The burger was juicy, the bacon crisp, and the cheese deliciously melted. It held together well too, something that huge burgers often fall down on. The Kraut Dog matched anything we’d eaten in Germany before, which is high praise indeed. The seasoned curly fries were a nice touch and a break from the standard fries on offer across Florida.
This all tasted great washed down with some iced tea and Mountain Dew and it took just minutes to be served. The joint also offers a wide variety of fresh sandwiches and a solid selection of locally caught seafood too, but we were stuffed already and left to browse longingly over the menu.
Whilst the food was great, the big selling points for O’Leary’s are the un-obstructed views across the Gulf Of Mexico and the array of local musicians who play sets twice a day under the tiki hut. We caught The Bethere Brothers covering our favourite Barenaked Ladies and Green Day tracks, and the slightly more psychedelic and downbeat Seabreeze during our time here.
To top it all off the joint has plenty of parking available, friendly staff, and is a good starting point for walks around Sarasota marina. We recommend a brief stroll around Island Park, which is the small park situated right next door, and some typically tourist photos of the huge ‘Unconditional Surrender’ artwork just down the road.
The Price: A pretty reasonable $9 for the burger and fries, and $7 for the kraut dog. We were happy!
O’Leary’s was visited by Yvonne in June 2014.
