At the Southern base of Bali is a resort known more for it’s high end spas and boutique shopping than it’s BBQ joints, but situated just a short walk through a supermarket car park (yes, really) is a joint well worth knowing about.
The Vibe: We happened upon Skooby’s whilst avoiding the hustle & bustle of Kuta’s market life. Slapped in the middle of a supermarket’s car-park; it’s a backyard BBQ truck, with enough space for 8 people to sit around and grab a quick bite.
Before we could finish ordering the chilli cheese hot dog we had the local beer, Bintang, served to us and ready to drink. You know when beer is just so cold it doesn’t taste like anything, but you just know it’s good? Yeah, it’s one of them! It’s the perfect appetiser on this hot day, and kept us entertained whilst we waited for our frank which was sizzling away on the grill right in front of us.
The first bite of a hotdog is make or break, and this bad-boy didn’t disappoint. It’s got that classic hot dog ‘pop’ as the juices from the sausage burst into your mouth and then slowly trickle down your chin. We aren’t ashamed though, it’s a great taste and we’re just glad that we aren’t wearing a white shirt on this trip. Then you’ve got the bun. This was lightly toasted which added an extra dimension and texture to what was already an awesome dish. To top it all off the dog was then loaded with smoky chilli and fresh onions. Whilst this felt like the right level of moisture…what’s a hot dog without some mustard? We added a thin slither of classic American and it worked a treat.
This chilli cheese hot dog is just one of the great options you can find at Skobby’s, and we’d love to head back to grab one of their awesome burgers or fresh milkshakes. This is a legendary joint for a quick bite or a passing beer and we highly recommend it.
Price: Just £1.50 for the hot dog, and a glorious 75p for a cold beer.
