After twenty two years of bossing the Kings Road barbecue scene in West London, though largely uncontested it must be said, Big Easy BBQ & Crabshack opened their huge Covent Garden location this year. The deceptively large joint has become an OutForLunch.co.uk favourite over the last few months and all due to their excellent £10 lunch menu. Allow us to introduce you to one of the bargains of the London lunch market.

The Vibe: Big Easy BBQ & Crabshack is a short walk from the famous Covent Garden market, nestled opposite the Maple Leaf pub on Maiden Lane. The area is a hot spot for pre-theatre meal deals and geared up for the high tourist turnover. This doesn’t always make for a great meal though, with those more seasoned locals able to spot a tourist trap steakhouse from a mile off. Big Easy have decided to tackle this head on and their £10 lunch menu is brilliant value.
We start off with a frozen margarita cocktail. It’s a touch smaller than the usual bar order, but trust us when we say that it’s just right for a working lunch. Their ‘Slushies’ come in strawberry daiquiri, sazerac, pina colada, mojito, and Miami vice varieties too and all go down with alarming ease. Those who aren’t as fruity as us could also go for some wine or a craft brewed beer too.
The lunch menu then allows you to have two courses from the standard starters, main, and desserts. We opt for their Aged Cheddar Mac ‘n’ Cheese starter (with another in our party picking up the Hush Puppies) and then their BBQ Pulled Pork burger and fries for our main.
The Mac ‘N’ Cheese starter could easily have been our main meal, with the picture certainly not doing it justice here. It’s a solid stack of macaroni and a nicely crisped sprinkling of grated cheddar cheese presented in an oven baked dish. It’s a favourite in the States and we’re pleased to see it breaking onto more menus in the UK.
The Hush Puppies were great too. These are deep fried balls of cornmeal batter, something of a savoury cousin to your average doughnut. They’re served with a chili dipping sauce and a portion of 10 balls is a generous amount here.
To be honest we were pretty satisfied by the time our main meal turned up, so the mountain of pulled pork certainly looked and felt gluttonous. It’s by far the biggest burger we’ve tackled in London recently and probably the messiest too. It’s a succulent bite though and finishing it felt like an achievement. The accompanying fries were crisp, though a touch salty, and certainly added to the ‘Big’ feel of our meal.
Big Easy BBQ & Crabshack is one of the best value lunch menus you’ll find in tourist London and we heartily recommend it.
The Price: Look no further than the £10 lunch menu for the best value.
